Piloting MIDI with 32 channels
Hello everyone and nice to meet you!
My name is grumpygamer and I am really grumpy! Nah, just kidding! I'm just a dad with an insane (and very expensive) passion for all things retro! Is there a software that would allow me to pilot that vast amount of midi ports on the Amiga? In fact is there a TRACKER that would allow me to do that? I hope someone knows! Also does anyone know how the CPU / Channels ratio is? Say with an Amiga 500 how many midi channels can I potentially pilot? |

I think you're looking for OctaMED SoundStudio, if your Amiga is quick enough.

Hiya and thanks for the info!
I only have an a500+, guessing that is not VERY quick? :P Should I upgrade to an a1200? Ideally I'd rather not spend money on it, but if necessary I can sell some gear. Also I have a DATEL midi interface (serial), though I'm not sure it actually outputs 3x different midi streams. I am of the idea that playing back samples is more cpu intensive than MIDI so ideally I would be able to have more channels for less power as there are no samples to play. I use Amiga with MIDI and Korg PA50.
MIDI is not very demanding, so for basic compositions even A1000 works okay with Music-X for example. For more complex compositions, of course A1200 is better with Bars and Pipes. Here is my A1200 running Bars and Pipes: [ Show youtube player ] For best results A1200 with 68060 is recommended (I have one). I like Bars and Pipes most, because it even works on my AmigaOne X1000 with the same synth, just have to switch the MIDI cable to a USB2MIDI. |

Ok, great!
I would like to stick to the requirement of trackers though as have never understood sequencers. Would that work anyways? Have you ever tried an a500? What do you define as "complex composition"? Thanks |

why exactly do you need 32 channels?
one single MIDI output only has 16. most of those Amiga interfaces with several outputs just have one actual output mirrored 3x. very few softwares and interfaces actually allow you to have several outputs at once. so pretty much you're stuck with 16 but more details are needed to know for sure, starting with explaining your use case, an d why does it have to be amiga at all. if all you want is a tracker, you could use Renoise on a modern computer.
