Amiga 3000D Ramsey 04 Static Column

Does the Amiga 3000D rev. 9/03 25MHz/no accelerator/DMAC-02/Ramsey-04 /Buster-07 support improved access speed using Static Column zip fast RAM? I got some from utsource.net but setramsey reports no Static Column mode and 'setramsey STATICON' results in a hanging machine. I installed a whole bank to test, 8 chips in the correct positions. The memory is detected as 4MB. The SysInfo speed test is still around .9 instead of the 1.0 I hoped for.

This is what I bought: https://www.utsource.net/itm/p/8648050.html

Would upgrading to Ramsey-07 while staying at DMAC-02 make sense? How can I check my zip ram hasn't been relabeled as static column when in fact it is not?

The kickstart checks for static column ram and enables static column mode if detected. Are you sure your ram is actually SC?

The OS will automatically detect static column ram if all of the modules are that. Not familiar with setramsey, but if it reports that ramsey is not using static column mode and the machine hangs when enabling it, the ram is most likely not static column.

Switching to a -07 ramsey will not change that.

Ran SetRamsey on my rev 6.1 A3000 (stock Ramsey 04, Super DMAC 02) with 16MB of static column memory (HM514402CZ6 chips):
Code:
1> SetRamsey

USAGE:- SetRamsey STATICON, STATICOFF, BURSTON, BURSTOFF, WRAPON, WRAPOFF
REFRESHOFF, REFRESHON n (n = 154, 238 or 380)

SetRamsey V1.50 by Nic Wilson

CURRENT SETTINGS
Static Column Mode - OFF
Burst Mode - ON
Burst Wrap Mode - OFF
FAST RAM chip Size - 1 Meg by 4 bit
Refresh Rate - 238 clocks
So it does not have static column mode on. If I enable it, the machine does not crash, but the harddrive starts giving errors, so its obviously not a good idea. According to the SetRamsey docs, both "Static Column Mode" and "Burst Mode" requires static column chips.

As a reference, I also ran SpeedGeek's RamseyConfig (after reboot to clean out any SetRamsey stuff):
Code:
> ramseyconfig
RamseyConfig 1.2 ©SpeedGeek 2018
Ramsey version = $D
Page mode = 0
Burst mode = 1
Wrap mode = 0
Refresh mode = 238
To make things a bit confusing, "Static Column Mode" in SetRamsey, is called "Page mode" in RamseyConfig, which can be seen if I enable it in SetRamsey and then run RamseyConfig (from RAM: mind you, as my harddrive stops working):
Code:
8.Temp:> ram:SetRamsey STATICON

CURRENT SETTINGS
Static Column Mode - ON
Burst Mode - ON
Burst Wrap Mode - OFF
FAST RAM chip Size - 1 Meg by 4 bit
Refresh Rate - 238 clocks
8.Temp:> ram:RamseyConfig
RamseyConfig 1.2 ?SpeedGeek 2018
Ramsey version = $D
Page mode = 1
Burst mode = 1
Wrap mode = 0
Refresh mode = 238
There is quite a bit of information in the RamseyConfig thread http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=78703 where it is mentioned that "Page mode" is not working with Ramsey version $D (-04) - "Static Column Mode" in SetRamsey parlance, which explains why "Page mode" is not enabled in my case.

So in your case, if your chips had been static column, "Burst Mode"/"Burst mode" is what should have been enabled with Ramsey -04 and the reason for hanging machine when you enable "Static Column Mode"/"Page mode" is simply because it requires static column memory - you most likely will also get a hang if you enable "Burst Mode".

So in a sense I was incorrect by saying that switching to Ramsey -07 would not change anything - as I understand now, it should enable "Static Column Mode"/"Page mode" to work correctly, but it still requires actual static column memory to work.
