add DF2 to my A4000
In order to use an external floppy when I already have df0 (floppy) and df1 (Gotek) internal what do I need to do? Is there a jumper or something to enable df2/external floppy?

No need to do anything else than plug the external floppy drive in. The Amiga autodetects it.

I think it must be a bad drive in the external drive then, thanks for confirming I don't need to mess with jumpers or anything.

Is this a normal DD 3.5" floppy drive? If so, the mechanism is the passive part of the external drive. There are a few logic chips in there that generate a pulse on the ready signal when the Amiga tries to detect the drive.
I guess you checked for an enable switch at the back of the external drive and tried it in both positions if it has one? |

Doesn’t the A4000 have a jumper on the mainboard to enable external drives if I recollect?

There is a jumper to enable internal df1 but I think that is it, no dhx jumper. I have it enabled as I have a Gotek as df1 and an internal floppy as df0. So according to other posts here it should autodetect the external floppy as df2.

Normally when connecting an Amiga compatible external drive, you do not have to adjust any jumpers on the A4000. It will show up as DF2 per default. |

Yes. If you have the motivation, you can double check that J352 is in position 1-2 so that the first external drive is DF2.
