Gotek as external drive with passive eBay connector

Hi,

I have an Amiga 500...fully recapped and clean.

I have a Gotek USB driven that previously I have been using by replacing my internal disk drive. It works fine when I do this,

However, I would really like to use both my internal drive and the Gotek connected to the external drive port with the Df0/Df1 selector switch so I can chose to boot form the Gotek.

I have had a bad experience trying to use an old external drive to house the Gotek which resulted in a Gotek burning out and then a CIA chip burning out. Needless to say I'm in no hurry to go down that route.

I picked up an eBay passive connector and plugged it in.

Like this one....

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/194243761...MaAh-_EALw_wcB

The drive comes to life looks like it's going to work but the Amiga doesn't read from the drive.

I've tried the jumper on S0, S1, S0 plus JC, s0 plus JC.

In FF.CFG I've tried 'interface = amiga', 'interface = shugart', 'interface = jc'.

I've tried my USB stick that worked fine when the Gotek was in the internal drive....and another clean set up.

Flash Floppy is v3.30.

Anyone got any guidance on where to go next? I feel like I'm missing the bleeding obvious!!

I have a very similar cable to this on mine:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gotek-Ext...-127634-2357-0

It works "out of the box" and I didn't change jumper settings on Gotek either. It is still configured as it was for use as internal drive (also for an A500).

I'm not sure it those settings really matter since they haven't for my own use.

Are you running it on Kickstart 1.3 as drive DF0 so you can boot games from it?

I'm guessing out of the box it will show up as DF1. I've just ordered a replacement Workbench disk so I can see if that is the case with mine.

UPDATE:

With the Gotek attached to the external drive and the drive selector set to DF1 I can get the disk to appear on the workbench! Feels like a win of sorts. I can run disks that are designed to be launched from Workbench.

However, if I switch the drive selector back to DF0 and try to boot from the Gotek I’m back to square one. Nothing happens.

Any thoughts? Feel like I’m moving in the right direction….surely someone else has gone through this exact same experiences?!

I assume you have Kickstart 1.3.

The Gotek should be set to S0. SEL0 on the external floppy interface will normally make the connected drive be DF1.

If you have a boot selector, when switched appropriately, it should make the Gotek the DF0 drive (the internal physical drive will become DF1, but will actually be unusable - since there is no internal logic for DF1 on the motherboard).

I got the bloody thing working!!!

Played around with the position of the jumper. 0 didn’t work…but it does when it’s on 2.

Makes no sense but I’ll take it.

"2"?

There is normally only S0 and S1 jumpers on the Gotek. Which Gotek motherboard version do you have?
