1084 Sound

Hello everyone,

I have a quick question about the 1084 Monitor. When I connect it to my Amiga 500 I only get sound from one stereo channel. I'm aware that the 1084 (without the "S") only has a single speaker but I would expect it to mix both stereo channels to that one speaker. So my question is, is there something wrong with my monitor (e.g. a cable loose inside) or is this the expected behaviour?

Cheers,
Jens

Hi Jens,
As far as I can remember, if you plug in just one RCA connector in your A500 (can't remember if the left or the right channel) it will mix internally both channels to a single RCA.

I'm not sure that's a thing the A500 does.

It might be best to just buy a cheap RCA 'Y' cable.

That's what I've done. I have a Philips CM8833-II which has stereo input but one of the speakers (or something on one 'side') is bust.

Indeed, the A500 doesn't do that mixing for a single connection like the A600 and 1200. It simply lacks the appropriate circuitry and connectors to do it. It's why you get a mixing Y-cable when you use an A520 modulator.

Ah, I had found another thread where another user remembered the same thing, looks like we were both wrong Good to know, I know for sure that I tested the single channel thing on my A1200 and A4000, but never on my A500.

Does your 1084 have SCART?

If so maybe you could try connecting something else and 'see' if it sounds right.

Might help to narrow down if the problem is the ports?

no scart

Unfortunately, my monitor does not have a scart input, I guess I'll just connect external speakers to the monitor then. It's just strange that this monitor used to be so popular amongst amiga 500 users back in the days when the missed "half" the sound.

At least I now know that it's no defective but simply that's the way it's designed.

Cheers,
Jens
