68060 setup
Sorry if this the wrong forum and/or has been asked before (I tried searching).
I've got my A1200/blizzard 1260/50Mhz/16 MB ram working again (yay). Replaced floppy w/ gotek drive and found an IDE drive that seems to work. Old IDE drive appears to have died (I'm hoping some bits can be salvaged, but I don't currently have a way to connect it to any of my other working machines, guess I'll want a USB<->IDE adapter or something? recommendations welcome). I used HD toolbox to make two partitions (I just input some more or less random parameters, that allowed me to create a ~2GB drive, seems to work OK for now even if the drive is really 40GB. I can always reinstall tweak/later on). Format & install of WB3.1 went fine, but now my questions: 1) Booting from HD (with startup-sequence) results in guru #8000000B... I guess I need '060 libraries and proper setpatch or something? (It's been too long...) 2) What's the easiest way to copy a bunch of stuff to the HD given I only have the gotek drive? Make a large zipfile that's split into 880k compatible chunks and transfer that to multiple ADFs that I then copy one-by-one? Any other setup tips are very appreciated. |

Which version of AmigaOS are you using? If 3.1 or below, you'll need a 68060.library and a dummy 68040.library as the OS doesn't know what an 060 is, so loads the dummy 040 library which in turn loads the 060 library.
If you're using 3.1.4 or 3.2 - they know what an 060 is off the bat so you only need 68060.library. They also have large disk support built in (>4GB) which makes things a heck of a lot easier to get going! You should be able to connect your drive to your PC and boot from it/see it in WinUAE if you run it as admin. Most people find this the easiest way to get files on/off their disk during the initial setup stages. |

KS 39.106 WB 40.42 (I'm not stingy, and don't mind purchasing the new version, but I'd like to get my setup done first if possible) Booting from the workbench disk (or from HD with no startup-sequence) works (though if I try to run lha_68020/lha_68040 it also gurus). And if you could break it down like I'm a n00b that would be fine (it's been > 10 years since I did a reinstall on this machine). What files would I want to download and where/how to install them? RE: Connecting the drive to my PC. I only have laptop(s) without any means of directly connection an IDE drive, so I think I need some kind of USB-adapter. |

Download this,
http://aminet.net/util/libs/MMULib.lha and use the installer to install it. It includes the 68060.library support. |

Thanks! Yes, that did fix it. Install gave a few errors (and I had to retry), but that's probably because I booted from WB disk while trying to install to HD. |

With an a1200 or a600 the easiest way to transfer files is using a PCMCIA CF card reader. I've used one that cost maybe £3. There might also be SD card readers around but they're less common.
