Sorry to necro but it's an interesting thread that I've been giving some thought to lately and just wanted to add (because it's barely been mentioned) that you absolutely CAN do save states on a real A500 or A500+ by way of an Action Replay cartridge in the side expansion (and a slightly different solution for the A2000, also from Datel Electronics, and possibly also A1000 if anyone actually has one).
To use "instant" quicksaves (i.e. to memory) you'll need double the amount of memory the game requires (so 2MB total RAM will cover all 1MB games). At the end of the session you save state to floppy (or a virtual floppy in a Gotek) and that takes a few minutes. Then load that state when you next fire up your Amiga (takes about a minute). The in-memory quicksaves are slower than quicksaves in WinUAE but also less prone to save state corruption (though that can still occasionally happen). Overall my vote goes to emulation (mostly for flexibility in controls but also instant loading and saving of save states) though I would like to figure out how to get filters looking more like my 14" SCART CRT does. I use a real Amiga with Amiga M1438S monitor, but when I use emulation I prefer external ReShade shader engine - there are so many settings that it may scare you at first, but probably everyone will be satisfied.
Here is a small demonstration of ReShade with WinUAE: Sanity - Interference |

CRT-Guest Advanced was ported for ReShade btw: Best CRT shader ever.

Looking at the screenshots it's not even close to Guest Advanced. But it's good to have options.

Thanks everyone for the advice! Some very nice options here. I found CRT-Lottes-SmartRes (from http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=...&postcount=355) with 4x / 4x to be the most similar to my CRT.
I've not played around with Reshade because I like the neatness and simplicity of having the setting wtihin a WinUAE config, but will definitely bear it in mind for future if I want to mess around with it more. |
