68060 and games
Like the topic says, im starting a thread about TF1260 and games since I can't find enough information and reports from users range from "nothing works" to "everything I ran works fine" (then you ask how many games they run and they answer 10 tops......).
I've recently purchased a TF1260 (arrived two days ago) and it's GREAT in Workbench usage but as expected im experiencing troubles making some games i love to work fine, even with WHDLoad. I was aware of the potential issues since the 68060 architecture is really something different and i have more than one A1200 so I can play games I love by other means but i think there is not enough information about what games work and what games do not and it'd be nice to write a list. I hope this thread could be used also for suggestions on which tool types to use to make games work. So far, here is the list: Alien Breed 2 AGA (WHDLoad, 1.4, PAL) - 100% Banshee (WHDLoad, 3.3, PAL) - 100% BloodNet (WHDLoad, 1.2, PAL) - Stalls after introduction, black screen after a fade out, music still plays Champions of Krynn (WHDLoad, 1.0, PAL) - 100% Champions of Krynn (WHDLoad, 1.0, NTSC) - 100% Dyna Blaster (WHDLoad, 1.2, PAL) - 100% with "Enable pal screen" in slave configuration (game is 320x200 grrrr) otherwise game runs but screen is corrupted so unplayable Dungeon Master (WHDLoad, 1.3, PAL) - 100% Dungeon Master (WHDLoad, 1.3, NTSC) - 100% F18 Interceptor (WHDLoad, 1.4, PAL) - 100% F18 Interceptor (WHDLoad, 1.4, NTSC) - 100% Farey tale adventure (WHDLoad, 1.1, PAL) - 100% Farey tale adventure (WHDLoad, 1.1, NTSC) - 100% Future wars (WHDLoad, 4.2, PAL) - 100% Future wars (WHDLoad, 4.2, NTSC) - Doesn't work at all. Not sure where is fault though (will try it on a another A1200 when i have time) Moonstone (WHDLoad, 1.6, PAL) - 100% Moonstone (WHDLoad, 1.6, NTSC) - 100% Paradroid 90 (WHDLoad, 1.1, PAL, "901MB" version) - slower but no blankings Paradroid 90 (WHDLoad, 1.1, NTSC, "901MB" version) - slower, occasional bad blankings lasting even seconds Paradroid 90 (floppy / PAL) - very slow Paradroid 90 (floppy / NTSC) - very slow and a lot of screen blankings Paradroid 90 (floppy / NTSC, cache disabled) - some slowdowns and some little screen blankings Sleepwalker AGA (WHDLoad, 1.2, PAL) - 100% Super Stardust (WHDLoad, 1.2) - main menu music is messed up and lots of graphics flashes. Tried some tooltip combos but no luck so far Super Stardust (floppy) - can't get past initial introduction sequence (the Star Wars like) Super Stardust (HD installer) - crashes on reboot NOTE: Reference base system A1200 PAL Rev 2B recapped with 8MB fastram KS 3.2 (ROM) NOTE 2: TF1260 latest BETA firmware (as of 02/10/2021) XC68060RC 50Mhz Rev5 system KS 3.2 (ROM) A1200 Rev 2B recapped (same motherboard as base reference, with TF1260 instead of just fast ram) NOTE 3: "Blanking" means the screen turns black for a moment and it's restored after NOTE 4: As my system is PAL when i write "NTSC" it means im forcing NTSC from either WHDLOAD or EBM (forcing because of lazy devs which made games in 320x200) NOTE 5: All WHDLoad games are from Zeb's (facebook) WHDLoad (11-Sep-2021), WHDLoad version 18.5.5948 I will update the thread (also with WHDLoad version) as soon as i try more games hoping to receive some tips and reports (*please* be specific on your configuration and how you ran the games) from other users. have you tried disabling caches?
For some games that are overly reliant on the blitter, your processor is now significantly faster, and its likely in the case of Paradroid 90 that its slow because the processor is constantly waiting for the blitter to finish. |

Of course I tried, disabling cache in "floppy" Paradroid makes it work better but it's still slower. Thing is, i would like some feedback from 68060 users also of other cards as maybe it's not only the processor but could also be the card itself / firmware version etc.

As I was playing with my 060 I degraded it in this order: first try disabling the 060 specific caches (SystemPrefs.lha), then data cache, then instruction cache, sometimes setting VBR to zero helps.

Sorry, don't get me wrong don't mean to be grumpy etc, i know the basics so general "disable blah" without specifying the game and the settings combo to make it work doesn't really help.

The title of this post should be edited and write TF1260 instead the generic 68060, it cannot be generalized in a compatibility thread referring to all accelerators with 060. For example, on my blizzard 1260, Super Stardust (WHDLoad) it works perfectly.

Thank you again Estrayk. You don't show tooltypes on the game (select icon and choose "Information" from the system menu) but I guess you haven't changed them and they are the default ones.

@ suppah
I’ll checkout SuperStardust for you with my TF1260 and report back but please keep in mind the TF1260 is in beta currently and does have some issues with Fast Ram access etc. I understand that updates will be available soon. |

As usual, maybe instead of creating a list of "ok" games maybe create a list of non-working games. This will avoid to put "OK" to 95% of the games that already work.
whdload emulates unsupported 060 instructions, so the remaining incompatibilities will be with non-removed self-modifying code (because caches are bigger/more performant than the previous 680x0 processors) |

Yup I think I will do that. I was thinking of making a page on a web space somewhere for the complete list while leaving non working ones only here. |

Is your MMU working and enabled in WHDLoad? I get same behaviour with NOMMU option, with MMU the game is working fine. Tested on TF1260 with old firmware and full 68060.

The MMU works yes, i have kickstart in fastram with MuFastRom (MMULib). I guess it's probably the beta firmware the culprit. Last edited by suppah; 04 October 2021 at 11:19. |

Hi I tried Super Stardust on my TF1260 (latest FW) and it works just some slowdown when the asteroids break, I can't say if this is normal a it's not a game I normally play.
I can say that I tried SSF2 earlier and it was running quite slow, I did not try any fixes at this point as I was actually just testing that my Joystick worked in 2 button mode =D Also FWIW I have a really old version of WHDLoad installed, 17.2 I will need to update that edit: updated WHDLoad to 18.5 no change Last edited by fitzsteve; 04 October 2021 at 23:02. |

I also tried out WHDLoad latest verison of Super Stardust AGA and all played fine on my TF1260 without changing any ToolTypes etc...just loaded it up pressed icon and all went well and exited to Workbench with no issues.
I don't have beta firmware on my TF1260, full 060 Rev.1 running OS3.2, my A1200 MB is v1.1. Also, I also was only able to play for approx 10 minutes as I'm recovering from leg surgery and sitting down in a regular chair isn't possible for me for longer periods of time unfortunately right now. Still was fun to play again with my miggies even for a short while. Last edited by klx300r; 04 October 2021 at 22:18. |
