Yup, hear maddog.. I dunno about ME usage though, I use it under Win98. My method to use it is a whack hack on the thing, but it's easy to remove if it goes wrong.

TV Paint was the best. A complete graphics package for free was good news. Also, every single complete program in the CU Amiga CDs... Ahhhh, the good old days...

I can't believe nobody mentioned MailWasher yet, it's my new favorite program, great to get rid of spam and unwanted mail and bouncing it back to the sender, I love it! Check out www.mailwasher.net
Also I like Opera alot, been using it for about a year and I can't believe how good it is, and the new version 7 is looking even better (although it's still at the beta stage). |

Kerio Personal Firewall
Everyone has their opinion of best (freeware) software firewall - this is mine. Weighing in at no more than 2MB, compact, stable and unobtrusive. Sports: Strong rule based application incoming and outgoing TCP/UDP/Other protocol filtering. MD5 program signature verification. Remote administration and Logging to Syslog daemons. For this I can recommend SL4NT. Free for home or non-commercial use. Last edited by §ane; 28 February 2003 at 08:10. |

Worker, a good Dopus clone. It runs on Linux but maybe there is a way to run it under Cygwin on Windows. Note: the shot is big but only 30 kb |

Then ( someone bumped this post, so it's time to update something ) other programs with new versions: Gimp v 2.0 ( considered stable ): a lot of changes ( 1.2 was 3 years old ) , downloading now. Also the windows version is now officially supported as well as the mac one ( this one under X as far as i have just read ). A new discovery: 7zip : great open source compressor with support for zip reading - writing, and a lot of other formats in reading ( Rar, Ace, etc. ), as well as a very good if not the best archieving method, called 7zip. It includes also a really good file manager for windows that can be configured to emulate the look and feel of explorer and of midnight commander. The only problem is that now it is windows only ( but it works with linux with wine ), but porting to other platforms will start soon. Last edited by mtb; 03 May 2004 at 21:10. |

I'll join in with the stuff I use on Windows (some have been mentioned by other people):
IrfanView - Multi-talented graphics viewer/partial editor. K9 - Brilliant bayesian spam filter. Clipomatic - Clipboard enhancer, very unobtrusive. Startup Control Panel - Adds a new Control Panel to edit Startup programs. eMule - my P2P of choice. MIDI OX - Multi-purpose MIDI tool. Opera - Web browser (now on my PC, Zaurus and phone!). TextBath - My text file reformatter (I wrote it to reformat eBook files). WndTabs - Adds window tabs and other nice features to Visual C++ 6. CodeWiz - Very useful add-ins for Visual C++ 6. Sygate Personal Firewall - Finally landed on this one after trying many others. JPluck - Converts websites into compressed Plucker format for handheld viewing. Media Player Classic - Superb, lean video player based on WindowsMedia Player 6.4. Beatnik clock - Skinnable clock with Internet time sync. Miranda IM - Modular instant messenger supporting IRC, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, AIM. EasyCleaner - Deletes old registry entries, duplicate/temp files, and other useful things. Shareware: TextPad - Definitely the best text editor I've come across (besides BED on the Amiga). An interesting site with (not necessarily free) a good software list: The Great Software List Last edited by FromWithin; 04 May 2004 at 14:43. |

oggplay : p800 vorbis player
VirtualDub : Video encode/capture Dscaler : Realtime Deinterlacer/scaler/Filter/TV viewer with quality that rivals pro hardware. SmartfTP Guild ftp : Gui Server Dc++ dmC : quick n dirty format transfers VLC player: Plays DVDr images in compressed rar files while downloading.. need I say more? ReClock : Re syncs video to your refreshrate to avoid tearing on TVs/display. miranda Lots of emulators and old software for them. Not shure if Lame or Xvid really are freeware.. open source educational but close enough I guess. |

Fantastic thread is this. I thought I had all the programs I'd ever need, but there are a few on here that I've found extremely useful.
Fromwithin, nice list. One link I don't understand however is Easycleaner. The site you linked is version 205338 and charges $20 for downloads This site however seems to be the Authors main page, provides a newer version 206369 and is free to download |
