Interesting tests, I remember a few games of that era had baffling issues, unfortunately all the ones I wanted to play it seemed! Have you looked at the vogons forums? There's a ton of chat on there about dos era hardware and getting games to work. I find early 3d accelerators fascinating, all starting from back in the day when my ati rage pro sucked balls trying to run half life and unreal. It was a time of very fast changing hardware, when cards and proprietary api's and even manufacturers could be obsolete in what seemed like weeks.
The dizzying array of different hardware that tomb raider will run on is a topic in itself.
In the end I guess I looked at the cost of a cpu and graphics card upgrade, and the time spend fiddling with drivers, then looked at the cost of an entire console and the time spent loading a dvd into the drive, and never looked back!
