I would definitely use a low profile switch that doens't fuck shit up accidentally.

Anotehr question: certain softwares can switch between NTSC and PAL modes on teh fly. Woudl this work after the switch is installed?

It will work, the pin only determines which mode the machine boots up in.

To be complete, you should also change the motherboard crystal to the correct one, PAL or NTSC, when doing this mod, but it is not 100% required. The timing will be slightly off otherwise. Monitors will sync to it just fine, but for example professional video equipment might tear frames.

Unfortunately I don't have the frequency here, but it should be listed in the A1200 schematics component list.

Hello, oh powerful moderator.

The NTSC crystal is 28.6363 MHz, PAL is 28.37516 MHz (from the top of my head, but anyone can confirm this).

But this is not sufficient. Also is needed to change a resistor/capacitor net around the video encoder. Too much hassle for a minor modification.

X2: internal rf output

So you have to do all this for the machine to default in "PAL" or "NTSC"? Or are you talking about a proper system conversion?

Seems like too damnd much for the first one...

@Akira

the best bet would be to build a small box that connects to the Amiga Video, from this have the necessary gubbins to do PAL / NTSC, theres plenty available, like Svideo converters etc.

I dont care about converting the output oto PAL or NTSC, I just want it to default in "PAL" mode (ie NTSC @ 50Hz), because most software runs on this way and I can't be arsed to get to the early boot menu every damned time. At first, and this was my beliefe, a switch was all that was needed, but the latest conversatons have confused me.

Even an internal jumper might be fine for me, I don't see any reason why I would like the macihne to default at 60Hz, except maybe if I connect it to an NTSC TV set, which I probably won't except on shows.

do the hack...pin41 to 5v using the resistor..it works perfect...I guarantee...it doesn't need any crystal replacement...I don't know why Jope says that
your A1200 will boot in PAL by default
I dont know why you are confused

Simplifying the answer: no need to swap crystals and encoder surrounding. Needed only to a full conversion.

Only the switch hack for play games. PAL Amiga units are best candidates for this, since the "NTSC@50Hz" mode will become true "PAL-M".

the genuine hack is disconnect the pin 41 of the Alice chip...(default connected to ground)
and connect it to +5v using a 4.7k resistor

this hack is on aminet and include a high quality picture and warnings about the possibility of damage to your motherboard
I have this hack made on my A1200...and works perfect
also you can choice to boot PAL/NTSC with a jumper using this diagram:

ground / pin41 / 4.7k +5v

btw, if you are using a high power supply....I recommend the use of a 10k resistor instead
I can't find the hack on aminet, can you help me with this?

Remember to change oscillator for a proper PAL conversion or CIA timings etc will be slightly off..
