Arrow AmigaOS 3.1 recommended patch list

Hi guys,

Very slowly, but still, I'm running a project to collect information on patches that it's good to have on AmigaOS 3.1 system. Feel free to take a look and make suggestions. :-)

Thanks.

Kind regards,

1. The only intuition replacement I have seen so far was the optimized beta by Cosmos. And I don't recommend it, it's buggy, causes a lot of graphics corruptions. One of the most obvious examples: entering the Kickstart boot menu damages the cursor.

2. There are many assignment managers, I use AssPlus: http://aminet.net/package/util/cli/assplu14

3. Patches/addons I use on 3.1, not on the list:

- UnixDirs3 - http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/UnixDirs3
- BK-RangerCheck - http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/bk_rangercheck (new addition, not much experience with it yet)
- TagLiFE - http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/TagLiFE
- Move command - I use this one: http://aminet.net/package/util/cli/move37
- AKCC - http://aminet.net/package/util/cli/AKCC
- TragicWB - for MagicWB icons, http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/TragicWB-1.3
- TrueMultiAssigns - http://aminet.net/package/util/cli/TRTrueMultis
- better sound datatype - http://aminet.net/package/util/dtype/soundDT41

4. Extension I plan to test:

- Break replacement: http://aminet.net/package/util/sys/break3710
- better picture datatype http://aminet.net/package/util/dtype/PictDT42

This is great. I'm using CWB on 3.9 so a lot of this is already either in the OS or the CWB install however having this info in one place is really handy and your Description column tells me what these things do, often in a far more succinct and useful way that going to the various downloads on Aminet would.

How can I download this Spreadsheet and open it on my PC offline? The "Download" menu-item is greyed out and it's a bit hard to read it online on a 1366X768 resolution screen. Have to scroll a lot with my mouse sideways.

Many pitfalls if you follow the list naively. For example double patches. Some stuff is not up to date and wrong recommendations. The recommendation level is also questionable. And it mixes patches and "normal" programs.

Perhaps you can help work with Kokos and make it better then?

This list needs to (a) be trimmed down a lot and (b) have some input from more experienced users.

Stuff like MUI, RTGmaster, notifyintiutionlib, mmulib, ClassAct and another dozen should be installed if some software requires it, not because you found it in a spreadsheet somewhere.

A lot of the remaining patches (CMQ, AssignWedge, UnixDirs, BlazeWCP (IIRC)...) and Commodities could be removed from the list if you simply recommend MCP - the later Aliendesign releases are remarkably stable if you know what you're doing.

"SystemPatch" got updated every other week for a while, each release claiming that "now function XYZ really got a lot faster, sorry for the error in previous release". I don't think anybody ever verified those claims or the patch's stability - crap like that should not get "highly recommended" status on any list.

1st rule of thumb: Most patches promising to increase speed are *not* increasing speed (especially if you use the Amiga the way Amigas are used today) and/or introducing stability issues/other bugs. Stay clear unless at least three people tell you a particular patch is worth it.

2nd rule of thumb: Version number fetishism is a clear sign you've got too much time on your hands. You don't need to hunt down BoingBag 15, go play a game instead.

For speed, bugfixing and saving CHIP ram:

MCP, PK's icon.library, fblit, and official BoingBags.

For additional functionality or eyecandy:

Make a list of things you're missing, then go to a forum and ask for recommendations. If you're searching for "lists of things that would be cool to install", "recommended add-ons", "must-haves for 3.1" etc., you have too much time on your hands. Go play a game instead.

And I will, as usual, recommend MultiCX over MCP
To keep those options open.

Similar to what Korodny wrote but first it should be clear what the list is/should for and target. If you want a list of patches that are known good or make less problems then you need a group of experts. I as non expert see already an unstable or crash system if you use two/three patches from the list at the same time. Then you have different systems where one patch might be good and for the next system not. Recommendation becomes difficult. Maybe it is enough to make a list of existing patches with short description what it does and let the user make the choice.
