Xsurf 500

Probably a really dumb question but if I get a xsurf 500 do I need a physical connection to get online. That is I can't use WiFi and would need a cable connection?

And by ethernet you mean, through the ethers?

Ethernet (/?i???rn?t/ EE-th?r-net) is a family of wired computer networking technologies commonly used in local area networks (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN) and wide area networks (WAN). It was commercially introduced in 1980 and first standardized in 1983 as IEEE 802.3.

Thankks for your help. Router isn't near the room where my Amiga is set up so looks like a no go.

I have an old wifi router that I no longer use.
My A4000 with a X-Surf/100 plugs into an ethernet port on this and this router connects to my main router via wifi acting as a bridge.

Works great.

I think you'd be mad to buy an XSurf 500 when you can get a PiStorm for about the same price.

Fastest 680x0 Accelerator yet
Fastest HDD controller yet
Huge amount of Fast RAM (upto 2GB)
RTG (gfx card)
Wifi
In the works : Scandoubler, AHI (sound card), etc.

Does the OP have an ACA500? --> From the Icomp website

"The X-Surf-500 is a 100MBit networking card for the ACA500"

There are other ways (cheap too)...given the speed of an A500, you're as well doing a serial connection (SLIP...or parallel port PLIP) ...serial is easier. You can build a serial to wifi bridge using an ESP8266 board or similar...see -> https://www.amiga-shop.net/en/Amiga-...iga::1304.html

I guess I'm mad then, because I bought an X-Surf-500 and I'm not going to buy a PiStorm.

It's much cooler to have an actual Amiga connected to the network. And besides, I can see the point of running an emulator on PC, but I don't see the point of putting an FPGA emulator inside the Amiga.

Now, an RPi as a harddisk interface that maps on the network I could get behind And RGB2HDMI is useful, even though you can use VGA.

Anyway, three key presses in the ACA500Plus menu, two doubleclicks on icons, finish the installer, reboot and my Amiga connects to the network on WB startup. It was really easy to get going.

You can also use it in the ACA500.

Next step is finding the right software. For now, I think I want a network drive mapped in DOpus and a couple FTP hosts likewise, and maybe some Lynx-like text web browser.

I have my router about 3m from the Amiga, so I have a wired connection and then PC and mobiles can connect over Wifi. Here are some Ethernet to Wifi adapters.

That's Vampire not PiStorm which is a software 680x0 emulator. Each to their own.

Whatever works and is cheap for me. When you add the price of ACA500+ to XSurf-500 you're entering a different realm of spending vs PiStorm

Was up late last night dunno why I wrote that.

I counter the 'emu HW is cheaper than real HW" with: emulators are free and you can have an Amiga on your PC is 3 minutes.

Anyway, topic is X-Surf-500 + Wifi.

I use one of these at home, can be fed from USB or any other power source. Neat little WiFi/Ethernet bridge: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vonets-VAP1.../dp/B097DKCBWF
