Insert coin is catchy. I love it as I did back then with Rainbow Islands.

see the "PRESS FIRE" as "free play" mode, with attract mode (that free play often doesn't offer since it skips to the game start screen.

Yesterday we had a talk with Toni about the graphics, and after that Toni pulled even greater graphics than before for AGA. Really outstanding.
So I updated it (with a few nice fixes also for OCS) on itch. Consider it pretty final unless big bugs are found. |

It's also very impressive that Toni could pull this off, as it's the third iteration of the AGA graphics.
We had an hour chat on crappy whatsapp last monday in english (only 3 years of spanish didn't cut it for me), and I explained how some of the tiles were present in the game. It appears that a few tiles are repeated a lot, so it's difficult to see the impact of changing a color on a sprite sheet vs the real game. But the new sheets rendered perfectly on the game after that, that Toni only saw at the same time as everyone else as he doesn't have the dev machine to build it. Great outcome! BTW I think it's ready for a HOL entry! Last edited by jotd; 08 May 2024 at 13:25. |

That particular game could be AGA enhanced just because the original sprite sheets had 10/11 colors. I could squeeze out 2 or 3 colors without consequences by separating the tiles per level on ECS (tricky but worked), and on AGA, on the other hand we had 5 or 6 spare colors. Plus the fact that palettes could be completely independent.
Added to that, game doesn't use sprites at all, only tiles, so upgrading from 3 planes to 4 planes wasn't too much an issue. If there were hardware sprites, migrating to AGA wouldn't have helped unless we switched to BOBs, and in that case, the bandwidth would have suffered more. I don't see any previous game I remade where an AGA version could be done with enhanced graphics, without huge rework. Note that Moon Patrol already uses 16+16 colors and there are no colors left after original palette has been used! Xevious is already AGA. Donkey Kong maybe? Toni did an awesome job. |

AGA would be pretty much required for the Popeye arcade game, since it has a mix of high resolution backgrounds and low resolution sprites

There is the Med-res-interlaced option that should be more accessible by OCS/ECS and would give the game a Tapper look (at the cost of twice the height characters though),but i would love to see it in action with a port of the C64 SNK vs Capcom
