CD32, that was cheap, ugly shit. Of the usable ones, I'd go with the 500+: Completely useless 'upgrade'.

The thought that anyone could think that about the A1000???
There's no hope for society... It's just a sign of the decay of civilization.... .. OK, to be fair, maybe I'm overreacting... It is just an opinion about an aging computer system... The first Amiga... Jay's computer.. No.. we're doomed.. ;-) desiv |

A600, hands-down. For me that is not even an Amiga.

How dare you dis my A600! It was my first (well nearly) Amiga, and its worked perfect since!
My A500+ on the other hand had a leaking battery and a broken floppy drive... If anything isn't an Amiga it's a CD32 or a CDTV. :P |

Part of C='s troubles was that they made too many models instead of [developing and] releasing their new tech. This poll makes that abundantly clear. The silly little Odd Numbers get my vote, therefore.

True, in the 10 years or so Amiga was active, it didn't really upgrade much, the AGA was probably the biggest change.

Because it looks like a toy. Amiga w/o numeric keypad = bah! :P
See above. C='s downfall started long before the A600 was released, so no, that's not the reason. |

I picked the A500+, and that was inspite of the A600's shortcomings.
The A600 is actually one machine I wouldn't mind underneath the TV in the lounge, next to the PS3. Small and compact. The A500+ irritated me quite an enourmous amount. Other than the Kickstart 2 and 1 meg of chip ram and fat agnus, Amiga owners deserved better than that, they deserved a REAL update, one that could and should have helped re-establish the Amiga a the #1 machine again. It was a marketing gimmick and a way for Commodore to get people to adopt their software so it would work on the A600. So for that reason, I despise the A500+ because it wasn't the machine we needed, there was no compelling reason to own it. |

Speaking of C= and updated machinery, wonder why they never stepped up their game on the sound capabilities while they where updating the graphics. AGA machines sound should atleast have matched the Falcons.

The Amiga should've had no less than 8 channels and free stereo panning right from the start IMO.
I don't know much about sound and electronics, but the above can't be that costly to implement. It's a mystery why it was never upgraded. |

In 1984 would be quite costly to develop and manufacture such a thing. But by 1991 should have been the standard. Even Dave Haynie had already 8 channel audio in his designs I think in the A3000+ with a full Motorola DSP, but has anything else C= killed it.

But I remembered the IIGS... It used the esonique sound chip in 1986, and it was the same chip used in the mirage synth in 1985.. AND.... one of the designers of that chip???? Quote:
But to be fair, the Amiga sound was pretty great! :-) desiv p.s. And from the IIGS Wikipage - sound section: The chip allowed for 32 separate channels of sound, though most software paired them into 16 stereo voices!! |

Not sure why everyone hates the A500+ so much. I guess it was a disappointment at the time, but to me it is an improved (though only slightly) a500.
I personally dislike the a500 and can see no reason to own one (although I have several ). Why? Well I guess I feel that all the Amiga models have something to offer, but the a500 has nothing that is not present in other models which also have other benefits. For instance, even though when it was released I hated the a600 (as it sent the message that Amigas were cheap, low powered gaming machines) I now think it has its merits. Now I find the a600 is small and compact, has an internal IDE interface, a minimum of KS 2 as default, pcm cia slot for easy transfer of files form pc to miggy, and ecs chipset. The Agnus can also support 2mb chip out of the box. The a1200 was also fairly compact, had built in ide, aga chipset, pcmcia, minimum of KS 3, 2mb chip etc etc. The a2000 was built like a tank, has heaps of zorro slots (zorro 2 is fine with graphics cards if you keep the resolution under 1024x768), a nice keyboard and is very expandible internally (I HATE external bolt on expansions). The a3000 had a lovely case, zorro 3, minimum of 16mhz 030 (although most had a 25mhz 030), built in scan doubler, ecs built in scsi and is quite expandible (although 5.25" devices have to be external) and supports 2mb chip ram. The a4000 had zorro 3 slots, aga, minimum of ks 3, 2mb chip, minimum of 030/25, 4 onboard simm sockets for 16 mb fast ram, built in ide interface etc. The CDTV looks funky and is a novelty. The CD32 is a console version of the A1200 and can take a keyboard and mouse out of the box. It also has hardware C2p.... but I have never found a single game that uses the Akiko! The A1000 has a nice case design, has the prestige of being the original and has collecting value. But the a500 has no ecs as standard, only ks 1.x, no zorro slots, all expansions have to be external (and untidy) and it is already a large desk covering wedge of beige. It has no ide or scsi as standard, no pcm cia... it does not even have the nice case design or collectability of the a1000. Just my opinion, but back in the day I would have said the a600 was the worst Amiga ever, now I firmly believe the a500 is. Last edited by abraXXious; 15 July 2011 at 00:43. |
