IF the simm is rated 60ns (or faster, unlikely to be the case) THEN you can use the 60ns setting, but there is no harm in running it slower (at 70ns speed). If the simm is rated 70ns then you ought to leave that jumper open, else you might well see errors. You should not use any simms rated slower than 70ns in a MkIV - so 80ns simms are no good.
If you have the SCSI kit and you have more ram in the second slot that the kit provides then you must use 70ns to ensure good timing, regardless of the speed of the fitted simms. There is nothing wrong with closing the MapROM jumper, I run mine that way. The speed difference is not all that much in most circumstances and if you only have a small capacity simm then the extra 0.5MB of available ram might be more valuable than the slight OS boost. |

I cleaned the contacts of the EDO Ram with ethanol and plugged it back in, same result when I run memtest. Guess the RAM is shot. Strange that games do run nonetheless.
Another question, what temperature does a 1230 usually run at? It's rather warm, 41.58 °C according to my digital thermometer. Is that ok? |

That temperature is fine. (Anything under 70C ambient is ok for the processor itself.)

Its not that weird actually, the games are not fully using the fastram so the defective ram adresses were not "yet" used.This dosent happens when you run the ram test, since it tests all the adresses in the simm, thats why it crashes.

Anyway, if your SIMM is defective I can sell you my spare (100% tested) 32MB SIMM -- it's fresh off my own Blizzard 1230 Mk IV ... say 12 euros inc. postage to Germany? 32MB should be plenty for WHDLoad games |

another way to test your memery is to load your ram disc until its full, then do a complete dump, if it freezes you know that your mem is faulty

I noticed some broken-sounding sound samples when playing a whdload game while the RAM was inserted, which were gone when I played the same game without. Doesn't that sound like the RAM is indeed defective in some way? And thanks for your offer, but I bought a 64MB SIMM yesterday (hasn't arrived yet, of course). |

( http://www.analogic.co.uk/Amiga_Addons&Upgrades.html ) I think the 1230/40 68030 Accelerator would be the one to get. The price is reasonable too. At half the price, the A1200 8Mb Memory Upgrade just doesn't have the same appeal (it will only make your A1200 a little faster). Just my opinion, obviously. prowler |

The most awful thing happened.i was thinking of ordering it,but analgoic didn't show the postage cost on how much it would cost to ship to my country.so i made up a fake cred number,but using my name of course,and i was hoping i would get to see the total cost of postage.but to my horror,the order went through.so i am in a lot of shit now,i emailed analogic quickly apologizing and hoping they cancel the order as quick,i am mortified

So, do you agree with my assumption that there is something wrong with the RAM (see post #49)? At least I hope that's what it is; I sure wouldn't like having to get another 1230 IV.
Has anyone else here ever experienced something like this? |

@AmigaFan
I had a sometimes crashing A1200+Blizzard IV which also never crashed in games, but it also passed all the memtests I threw at it. All I did was changed the A1200 it was plugged into, and ALL the problems disappeared, not a single crash since. Same memory, same power supply, same hard drive. It was very strange - getting a secondhand A1200 can turn up who knows how many problems. It could of course have been something like the memory chip not plugged in fully who knows. I even considered overheating here in Oz. I should mention that it only started crashing when I added the SCSI kit with its own ram (jumper was set to 70ns). I even thought maybe the 128MB SIMM drew too much power or something. To this day I have no idea what the problem was, but I suspect it was the motherboard - some A1200s are sensitive to accelerators although I thought it was more 040/060 rather than the 030. So yeah, try a different memory stick is one suggestion, and especially make sure both card and memory properly slotted in. What motherboard revision do you have? |

i said that earlier myself.Amiga format did an issue once on buying amigas.when reviewing the A1200,it stated that some motherboard models can cause chaos with some accelerators.
