Amiga pimp-up session
I have decided to invest more money into my Amiga, now that after removing all the MCP shite the beast is more stable than ever.
I have been looking at PCMCIA Ethernet cards, and also at 128MB SIMMs for the accelerator, as well as a 6.4GB HD I want the Ethernet because I got sick of serial transfers and I want to read the PC drives as if it were Amiga ones. I already bought me a hub so I'm set for local network. The Ethernet is being bought first, no doubt. However one question is killing me: Should I get the 6.4GB 2.5" HD or should I get the 128MB SIMM? Both cost about the same, only drawback for the HD is that I don't have a craddle for it, since I currently have a 3.5"superslim inside the Amiga. which would you get? What do I do with my Amiga? Music, pixelling, and WHDLoad mainly Once she's on the net constantly, I will do some emailin with Yam and IRCing with AmIRC, etc. |

Which accelerator card do you have ? Will it work with 128MB ? Only the Blizz 1230 IV can handle that much
None of the things you mentioned NEED that much fast ram. You will go fine with 32 or 64, even 16MB will be enough for WHDLoad, pixeling and Music ..... so go for the 6,5GB HD |

hmmm...
I brought a set of 128 simms, they fit and function fine in either the 030 50mhz cobra or the 1260 bliz only needed the memory because one of the muds I compiled and ran (Dibrova!!!,) needed 60 megs just to load it all up ready for connection. My main machine presently is an A4000/Apollo 060 with 70 megs... The answer really is, unless you want to scan A4 pages at say 300 dpi etc, you really don't need alot of memory yikes, I haven't used my A4 flatbed for years... anyway, now I'm not sure why I tagged on the end of your post, hope that kind of helps somewhere along the line! |

My Microbotics Xa1230, though being a bit shite (autoconfig memory only with OS3.1, with 3.0 it has to be loaded once at bootup), takes 128MB SIMMs. I checked Thanks for the tips guys, I gues I'll go for the H, but what will I fill it up with? |

@ant512
quite right Ant512, in my over anxious endevours to contribute I forgot I often took the accelerator and scsi kit as one unit... but since it was just a glance it wasn't a big deal since if he only owned the accelerator he would already know the oversight :P C'mon, it's Akira he knows what he's on about ,) He just wanted to know if memory or harddrive was the way to go, he'd already sussed the 128 threshold of his card :) I have it pop'd at 4 and 128 since it seems to be fussy which 32/64 simm it uses with the 128... |

Go for the harddrive, unless you want to start editing mp3's or scanning vast amounts of stuff at 300 dpi + then you won't need the ram... I ran my A4k with 64Mb for many years and the only 'out of memory' errors I got were from badly written programs that tried to open a hard coded address that's not in the A4k memory map...
I only went up to 128Mb because I was offered 4x32Mb simms for my 4 16Mb simms as a straight swap I now wish I hadn't thrown out that box full (well, over 40) of 2.5" HD mounting brackets pulled out of 1200/600's when putting 3.25" drives in |

You can get away with not using a cradle by flipping the HD upside down (circuit board side up) and just using double sided tape to secure it to the RF shield. I had to do this because of my SD/FF. I put a strip of electrical tape on the circuit board side where the keyboard could possibly interfere.

By the way, I wouldn't risk putting a 2.5" lose inside the case. I tend to move the machine around, specially when working on events. maybe someone can buld one for me? I have one in my a600... |

But I don't want to deprive my little A600 from the privilege of having an HD! I don't think the 3.5" would fit her, otherwise I'd give her that and I'd nab the cradle from it.
YES, good idea, I'll try it out |
