I checked they were pushed in properly. Might it help completely removing and replacing them then?

Thanks guys. Have tried different psu, reseating roms, disconnecting disk drive. It never gets to the insert disk screen, it won't boot from its hdd when plugged in. I am now thinking either it's the psu connection to the motherboard, the roms being fried, or some caps. Or it's just utterly dead.

Early startup appears to be a no.

Nope. Black again now. No early startup or kickstart screen.

Thanks Roy. Did the swap, exactly the same wired shorting disk drove sound, no kickstart screen. On the bright side the busted machine has working 3.1 roms... Left with caps, CPU, power connector :-(

hi again, can you power it up and leave it on for about 10 minutes then see if any of the chips get overly hot to touch.
and do this with nothing attached and it has to be around 10-15 minutes(not even the floppy just the motherboard with roms) also can you see if the green power led is full on and not dim please. and while you are doing this take turns pushing down on each chip while its on(use your thumb)but not loads of pressure, and do it on a flat surface to see if you have dry joints(this is quiet common due to age) Last edited by roy bates; 17 December 2011 at 16:39. |

Ok power led appears same as my other 1200 which I switched on to check. So bright, I guess. It's now on and waiting... Interestingly the floppy light came on intermittently so whatever weirdness makes the floppy go mad on startup happens without it. Will report back at 4.

Ok still goes mad floppy light after. Left to right - 3 big square chips warm, middle big square not so much, Rom chips slightly warm, 020 warm. None really hot. This after 10 mins or just over.
