Exploring and extending the elite game engine

There was a recorded presentation by another person hacking the BBC elite in May. He talks about how he has linked up Python code outside an emulator to visualise and do other things, including a laser display.

  • The game and its significance
  • Decoding the game code
  • Some new Elite hacks from me

The original source and (dis)assembly of the BBC/Electron versions of Elite is extremely well understood and commented. Tens of people have put hundreds of hours into dissecting and discovering it's secrets. There are several amazing patches that greatly improve playability and add new features including the recent anti-flicker patch.

Unfortunately the Amiga/ST port by Mr. Micro's aka Rob Nicholson did not have access to the BBC source code so it is a re-write from scratch sharing little or no logical aspects with the BBC only the procedural galaxy generation and the 3D shapes for the ships.

That is quite interesting.

Funny enough, I just recently re-watched 'The Making of ELITE'. I love history surrounding making of the game.

Some channel called Zorzo(?) on YT did a really long playlist series of gameplay with the BBC Master version and was in contact with Ian Bell about bugs/issues and gave regular updates Ian's responses. The 128k version is my fav' 8bit but it has bugs.

edit: here it is
