Home of the Underdogs is down, forever?
The last couple of days I've been trying to get on but have found that I can't. I've just found out that it may be down forever which is a huge shame as it was a very useful resource site for abandonware etc. There is a project on ug

Apparently the webhost went bankrupt
I think it would be easier if you had a list of what is needed (on the wiki of UG maybe? so that it can be updated when needed) and then people look if they have anything. Btw, as far as I remember, most of the downloadable content there (i.e. not the reviews) was gathered from some IRC channels (things like #oldgames on Efnet, Undernet and such). It is probably still there. |

There is a list on UG's "Home of the Underdogs memorial archive" wiki. Thanks for the tip on the downloadable stuff, I was unaware that it was available on IRC.

Well, in the far distant past, IRC was often used to circumvent the various server problems HOTU have had. Some old list of channels (for Efnet) I found: #aw, #abandongames, #abandonware, #oldgames, #classicsgames, iso-classics, #pcoldies Old list as I said, so maybe some of them disappeared/moved to another server. Edit: I think my Blackthorne version comes from there. Not sure, but I also believe hotu was where I got the rip of Get Medieval (archive.org is a bit too long to load right now, I'll look later or when the list on the wiki is finished) |

Mr Creosote's of EAB excellent and intelligent site has been one of my favourite retro game sites ever. Check out his forum.
http://www.goodolddays.net/ Try these games sites out http://www.xtcabandonware.com/ http://forgottenroots.de http://abandoneer.com/ This one has mostly ugly CGA games. Fun for historcal purposes. http://retrograde.trustno1.org/index2.htm http://www.kmzpub.ru/ http://www.486games.net/index.php http://thehouseofgames.net/ http://www.dosgraveyard.com/ http://www.abandonware-paradise.net/ http://www.dosspirit.net/ http://www.mroldgames.com/news.php http://www.oldgames.sk/en/ http://www.bestoldgames.net/eng/ http://www.juegomania.org/ http://www.abandonware-france.org/ http://computeremuzone.com/pc/ http://www.classic-gaming.net/games/ Last edited by Fred the Fop; 23 February 2009 at 01:32. |

I love HOTU.
Thanks for the links Fred. At least we have other sources. Where is Mr Creosote? Haven't seen him around here for a while. I see he's just posted a message on that site you've linked about HOTU going down, so he's still out there doing good. |

Sad to hear about HotU Nice list of sites you posted here Fred
Another site would be 'Old Games Never Die' (OGND), but it's down atm, because they move to another server. |

Another site is the old computer. I found it through this page which is a good repository of most old flight sims (and other military vehicle sims). |

I used to love Home of the Underdogs with it's "possibly one of the best xxxxxxxxx ever made" opening lines to many reviews. That site got a lot of use out of me.

it was a very nice site, but it was always dead slow for me and only too easy to get the "multiple download ban" when a download would fail and you would retry it.
Still it was a good place to find the rare games without risk of getting a virus/worm infested copy; if abandonia didn't have it, I would usually find it on HOTU complete with manual. |
