Like it was designed that way..
So ..having repaired the faulty cpu relocator from Sordan ...I finally got my HC533 installed ..hopefully for the final time.
I had to replace the mainboard CPU socket with turnpin so I could add 2 more stacked to gain a little height. I can now access the rom switcher pcb ...having moved a few pins from topside to underside. The 40 pin female IDC connector I ordered arrived ..and the pins were extended using a 40 pin section of header strip. Thus the compact flash adapter is still removeable but now reaches through the rear slot on the A500 .. Just what I wanted and minimal disruption to the case. So ..total mods on this A500 so far .. HC533 and extension CF adapter ..plus CPU relocator plus Even CIA board for bootable external floppy...plus Gary adapter and fully populated ram board with RTC...also fitted SuperDenise. For now at least I'm calling it _done_ ... I can now boot KS 3.14 and 3.14 workbench from compact flash ...and the option of KS 1.3 rgds VS Last edited by Vipersan; 18 May 2020 at 21:34. |

So ..to run in 1.3 mode ..
power down ..pull out the CF card ...switch to KS 1.3 and reboot.. That brings up the 1.3 insert disk screen. ..as expected. Not tried running a game from floppy yet. Needless to say the souped up A500 wont boot with my A570 attached. This might be due to the HC533 ...but might also be a ram conflict as the A570 now has ram of its own which might well be conflicting with the trapdoor expansion ram in the A500 .. I recently added a ram expansion card to the A570 along with a SCSI interface and SD2SCSI v5.5 module. The SCSI adapter can be turned off witha switch at the rear .. Not so easy to disable the extra A570 2mb internal ram card. I may well pull that temporarily just to see if it allows the A570 to boot. watch this space. This is purely experimental anyway as the A570 is usually connected to my unmodded A500. rgds VS Last edited by Vipersan; 18 May 2020 at 23:27. |

Just tried pulling the A570 ram pack ...but made no difference.
Still no CDTV boot. I guess even with KS 1.3 and no CF hard drive attached to the HC533 the A570 wont play nice with the HC533. On the bright side I just booted up prince of persia from floppy in 1.3 mode. That appears to run just fine. ..I guess you cant have everything. lol |

I wonder if the issue is similar to that with the same card in the A2000 in that it autoconfigures a bunch of stuff but then has no COPCFG to let the next PIC to autoconfigure.
In the case of the A570 it would play nicely except as the 86pin connector has "CONFIG IN" grounded so it is expecting to be the very first device yet in reality due to the HC533 the OS has already autoconfigured a bunch of stuff. You could probably manage to get a normal ATAPI CD-ROM to work of course but IDEFIX97 will screw things if you try that with a CF card. |

Hi Druid ..
I did notice a small single jumper on the HC533 .. Not particularly well documented ..but from my investigations may well disable the CF card ? If it does I might well replace the DPDT rom switch of the rom switcher pcb with a 3pole double throw switch which will enable the ability to fully disconnect the CF function when in KS 1.3 mode ..thus negating the need to pull the CF card before switching to KS 1.3 Do you know if this jumper does what I think it does ? rgds VS Last edited by Vipersan; 19 May 2020 at 11:54. |

The jumper on the HC533 is to switch the IDE controller type. One is designed for KS2+, the other for KS1.3 - see https://bigbookofamigahardware.com/b...t.aspx?id=2058

reading from the link ..it does indeed affect the IDE/CF interface ...but sadly not a disable function.. Pity as this would have been more useful in KS 1.3 mode and remove the need to pull the CF card. I now wonder if the power jumper on the CF card interface would be be more effective to achieve this...? JP2 on the adapter looks like it switches between power via the 40 pin interface ..and external power via the floppy 4 pin connector. Last edited by Vipersan; 19 May 2020 at 12:06. |

Yes, it's not particularly well documented IMO, from the description I thought that this was actually a ROM switcher but that "JP1" jumper as indigolemon says changes the device type.
OKTAGON is for 1.3 OKTAPUSSY is for 2+ If you run systest or similar with each you'll see different device types loaded. IIRC the OKTAGON type device is limited to 4GB also but I'm only using a 2GB CF card (and in an A500+ with 2.04) anyway so I can't be sure. There is a solder blob next to it, "SJ1" that I'm curious about as well as an "OC1" which looks like it might be an intentionally "missing" component, OC1 goes into the Xilinx "Glue" chip. No idea about the functionality of either. Lukzer is on the Polish Amiga board (ppa.pl - https://www.ppa.pl/forum/elektronika...we-turbo-hc000 ) I have registered to ask about those two but my membership has not yet been approved. |

It IS a ROM switcher, for the IDE controller's ROM. :-)

So ..eventually ordered one of these :-
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/113692160606 DPDT switches ..centre off So three positions. The theory/hope being. The centre position is off for all ..no connections made...thus the HC533 defaults to Octagon mode. I can use one side/pole of the switch to hook up to the JP1 jumper on the HC533 .. On = Octopussy Off = Octagon Centre off ..(the other pole) disconnects power to the CF adapter ..but in either Up or Down position applies power to the CF card ..and I retain the HC533s ability to supply CF power and select Either Octopussy or Octagon. Hope that makes sense. rgds VS Last edited by Vipersan; 14 May 2024 at 22:32. |

Totally is! The issue form is is that from the wording it came across as you could boot Kickstart 1.3 to 3.1 where as it actually meant you could boot from the IDE adapter _USING_ any version of Kickstart from 1.3 to 3.1.
I'm not the only one who made this wrong assumption either. |

So ..the centre off DPTT switch arrived ..and you can see it hanging off to the left of the photos ..
I will need to extend the wires with some longer Dupont wires to mount it. There is a photo showing the switch in the Octopussy mode and CF card powered with KS 3.14 4th photo ..and a photo with the switch in Octagon mode with KS3.14 and the CF card powered ... this results in a guru error ..but wait a few seconds and it will reboot to 3.14 insert disk screen ..but obviously wont access the CF hard drive.. the 2 middle photos .. and finally the switch in centre off position and KS1.3 enabled ..which cuts power to the CF card ..so no hard drive...and octagon mode enabled as J1 on the HC533 is open as well (centre off) The A500 is now ready to simply accept a disk ..and run from that. 1st photo rgds VS Last edited by Vipersan; 26 May 2020 at 18:54. |

..Calling time on this build ..
Just a spruce up to go..but.. It's about as far as I want to push it ..mod wise. Still have some work to do on the Basic A500 which will remain with the A570 ..but will also be dual boot. rgds VS |
