This new system is a complete replacement for the optical drive, which is a step on the right direction. I wish we could do the same with our CD32s, relying on the lasers is a recipe for future disaster.
Also the modchip system of yonder was much simpler in operation (something like "does the wavy mark exist on the disk? no? well doesn't matter"), this is a much more complex development that required, as explained, years of reverse engineering and figuring shit out. Now teh way the copy protection works and how the CD drive controller functions is truly cracked.
