Concerning the '$', there are two places where it works. First, the "if"-command supports it natively, but there only provides access to environment variables. No other command expands the $. The execute command supports argument substitution, though in a patchy way. Thus, if you want to pass around arguments and make shell scripts depending on them, the only way would be through 'execute'.

The second place where $ works is within execute, but not for argument substitution, but for <$$>, i.e. it has a different meaning, in best (inconsistent) Amiga tradition.
