For me the best example of this was in Metal Gear Solid. If you have good characters in the middle of a good storyline, there's no way you won't feel attached to them.
When I finished Metal Gear Solid, I felt like my life was a little more empty. (There were really a small number of games that made me feel like that. It's like a friend who spend lots of great time with, is now going away, and won't be coming back)
I can understand how you felt wih Final Fantasy. My problem with it is not in the storyline, it's in the gameplay.
