Buy a cheap 6€ USB gamepad (non-analog, or use hat switches), solder on an Atari 9-pin joy connector.

Then get a wooden or metal board, about 120x400mm, and drill holes for buttons and joystick (I prefer those battops) you can get cheap here: http://www.arcadegames.se/shop (click a flag that suits you )

Attach joy and buttons to female 9-pin Atari plug, put board across lap and enjoy

Dirt cheap, adapted to you, perfect components, and a tiny amount of effort. The only recommendation I will ever make in these vital matters
