Null-modem cable question

OK, here's the thing I'm asking:

I have a standard PC null-modem cable with 9-pin female connectors on both sides. Other side is attached to my PC and the other side is attached to my A500. Of course there is an adapter on the A500 serial port that transforms the cable to a 25-pin female.

The adapter is made by 'Vivanco' and it is said to "use to transform 25-pin modem and mouse cables to fit in the 9-pin PC-socket". You cannot open the adaptor cause it's made on a soft plastick molded together.

I have heard that you may destroy your equippment if all the non-used wires are attached inside the adapter cause A500 have voltage on those circuits.

What should I do? To try the file transfer or not to try? Well there's the problem..
