HappyENV (and its clones) is a pretty nice hack but I had some problems with it in the past .

No it wouldn't as this line:

takes care of all assigns (except for the conditional boot when one of the mouse buttons is pressed)
That takes slightly less time than making 'assign' resident, issuing it a dozen times and removing it from memory.
