Speaking of removing IC sockets, what's the best solution? Desoldering braid or desoldering pump?
I find it hard both ways :/

Generally pump, but sometimes I need a bit of braid just for the odd stubborn node. I have both handy. I agree that it can be tricky with both, but getting the correct diameter tip on the pump and cleaning it regularly usually gives it the edge. I always reflow old solder and sometimes use fresh solder on the braid whilst its laid on a stubborn node too. It took me some time an patience especially with the PLCC sockets, have to be really careful not to break any of those old tracks!
