Did you remove and reinsert the GVP SIMM modules several times? If you did, then it may well be that it did the trick.

The 64-pin SIMM sockets of the 030 and 040 GVP Combo accelerators I've seen so far were all rather fiddly - the SIMM modules tended to wriggle out of them eventually. (My current A2000 has the wires coming out from the PSU arranged strategically to keep the SIMMs in their place....)
