The problem with that approach is what works well on the Z80 doesn’t work well on the 6502 and vice versa. So a lot of code had to be re-written and optimised for the 6502. That’s fine if you have the time to spend on the optimisation phase.

I’m sure a ground up 6502 conversion would have been more optimal (especially if hardware sprites were used) but it would have taken longer and been less accurate.
