Eh, sorry, I like Ports Of Call, but that game is just a fraction of what Pirates has to offer.

In Pirates you literally live a life, and the amount of various things/goals which you can do and pursue, and which actually matter and affect this life, is staggering.

And the best thing is the way they structured it, with getting older, more injured, dividing the loot, etc, and the absolutely genius idea of having the "life ranking" at the end. This is what the whole game revolves around and how it's supposed to be played, with trying to make wise decisions along the way, but not cheating by saving/reloading. When I was a kid I didn't really fully grasp that and save scummed to oblivion, but now I enjoy doing "runs" like in true roguelikes.
