Back in 1987, when I was in high school, I regularly 'designed' computer architectures on paper. I put 'designed' into quotes, because I didn't really do any design, I simply put down specs, but not overly unrealistic ones.
I was looking mainly at the X68000, from information off the magazines Edge and ACE, and I also got a few hints from arcade machines when these magazines showed technical details of those machines, and from workstation machines as presented in local Greek magazines.
So, if I belonged to a team that would design a home computer for the 80s/90s, the way I'd want it to be done is roughly how I describe it above.
