not all USB serial adaptors are equal, I know we had issues at work with some that just plain didn't work for some purposes that required all the lines in a 9pin serial port. some only support simple serial terminal comms, Tx, Rx etc. and not full handshaking RTS CTS DTR etc.
Unfortunately from our experience it wasn't possible to determine what they supported from the spec, we only found out through testing which ones would work.
