My experience of joysticks, on both Atari 800XL and Amiga 500, was usually of the sort with the base suckered onto a large thin hardback book like a comic annual, and I would use my left hand (as I am) to move it, and the other hand to hold the base steady or to press any keys as required.

As for arcade machines, I think I managed OK, I managed to beat the only fighting game I've ever completed (Marvel Super Heroes) with their controls that may have favoured me, I can't remember, so long ago.

But I have managed to adapt to the fancy handheld sticks that were notoriously right-handed, like the Konix Speedking, which I thought was possibly the best stick I ever used, even though I had to use my right hand. I also had the Cheetah Bug, but it wasn't as good, as I think it was too small.
