Rebellion began as a publisher on the Amiga around 1992/93 and was set-up by
Jason Kingsley (and his brother Christopher) for the purposes of releasing
Eye of the Storm in 1994 after
Empire cut them loose following some long delays with game development. They probably made a real name for themselves when they were signed up by
Atari to develop for the-then new Atari Jaguar and released
Alien vs Predator and
Checkered Flag around the same time. Later on they acquired the
2000 AD comic series and developed games based on the
2000 AD characters.
Presumably they must've done well because they went on to acquire
Core Design and
Eidos after that in the mid-2000s and have made a steady string of acquisitions (incl. the
Bitmap Brothers portfolio, as Jeff mentioned) in the years since on the back of development/publishing successes (e.g.
Sniper Elite and its various sequels). You can read more about them on
