Apparently, some people accquired the hardware along with the software, and paid money for the product consisting of a bundle of hardware and software. That is "selling it".
However, no matter whether that was a "free service" or not: It remains illegal to begin with. You cannot legally distribute 3.9 components without a license. Even if the vampire would have been given away for free, it does not make a difference concerning the legal status of the affair.
