Indeed I was too hasty in proclaiming victory, it seems. The fact was that I loaded the game and when I changed the v1.01 disk 1 to v1.00 disk 2, the game loaded into the first level. Since I always played with cracked disks - even back in the 90's - I didn't know that the manual protection was AFTER the first level (as in most games the manual protection is just before you start playing), the immediate absence of it made me thing it had worked. And since the manual protection occurs well into the game, I was under the impression that the code for it would be on disk 2, so to know that it worked with the v1.01 disk 1, I thought that the crack would "port" over as well.
I haven't (and won't) tested the uncracked disk again, but knowing now that the crack is applied in disk 1, I suppose that it won't work.
Lesson learned, though: one should not speak before testing all the way through.
