It's also worth mentioning that a lot of games work only with certain types of 2 button controllers.
The most standard type and the one supporting most games seems to be the Sega Master System type of joystick and anything compatible with it.
Sega MEgadrive controllers are not always supported. This has to do with some resistor thing not being pulled up from a line or something (it has been explained to me before).
So if you have a Sega Megadrive pad, a lot of these games might just not work with two buttons.
Also WHDLoad patches seem to favor the Master System pads, when they get the support added. Example: Turrican 3 works great in the original with Megadrive pads, but not the WHDLoad install.
