I'm pretty sure Deep Core is the work of Sauron/Miracle with some loader + disk stuff by Conqueror/Agile - not surprised it requires some work to crack :)

I do exactly the same as Dan, basically store the 8x8 font in a large vertical strip, 8x972 or whatever vertical size... then the indexing is just ascii-adjust, *8, done :)
