Cannot get gamepad to work

I am using FS-UAE in Zorin OS (ubuntu based). I have a XBox Series X gamepad connected via USB. The gamepad shows up in jstest-gtk and I can see all the buttons being pressed, dpad, triggers, etc....

I suspect not noticing the difference in lag between the Mister and Pi is down to the much bigger lag in my reaction times...

This is indeed something to do with the Pimiga configuration. I'm using the same demo drive from Pimiga with a new ClassicWB install and the sound is fine.
