Only the scoreboard seems to be in Mode 1, the rest of the screen is obviously Mode 0 so there's no 4 colour limit to overcome :)

I think I've actually included this in a couple of my OCS-prods that make use of the 6bpl mode with only 4bpl DMA trick for HAM-chunky, which doesn't work on AGA :)

There were actually SVGA-capable cards with only 256kB of RAM, which meant all regular VGA-modes worked fine but you only got 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions with 16 colors.

My point being, if the same clicking can be heard on both real hardware and in WinUAE then it's definitely not a WinUAE bug, so you could've skipped creating the original post in the first place.

At least when it comes to Metropolice and Supergroove 2, the problem might very well be the playback routine, as I recall having a small bug in the routine that might have caused said clicking sound....

Doesn't change the fact that Commander Keen still uses hardware scrolling on EGA (at least from Keen 4 onwards), if the card supports it.

EDIT: Did a quick check and even Keen 1 seems to do EGA...

Indeed, vertical scrolling works on all EGA/VGA cards (at least in the 4 bitplane mode) but horizontal pixel scrolling isn't implemented by all clone-cards.

Sure there is, you can pretty much define any vertical resolution for the screen. The timings will of course still be PAL (on a PAL machine), but the visible screen will be whatever you define it to...

Well, some demos make use of the hardware and some don't. This pretty much holds true of every single platform out there. You dont't have to be a scener to know this, but it obviously helps.
