The noise made by the drive when making the .scp file was bad but nothing so alarming...

From my personal experience it can happen that a disk becomes unreadable...

I have a Blizzard MKIV 1230 as well and I'm pretty sure I'm using the smb2-handler.020 (I'll check that just to be sure) without any issues on a new OS 3.2 install.
