Why isnt Amiga OS running on a ppc mac?
Just a thought...
Why hasn't the Amiga OS 3.9 / 4.x been ported over to the mac? Hardware is already built and in good supply? Apple may complain i guess...but so? just a thought.... Amiga hardware will always be expensive and rare......:) |
Have a look here : http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=44669

OS3.9 is not possible as it is 680x0 based
OS4.x could have been possible, but IMO what is the point? Afterall it has no classic backwards compatibility for games; demos etc. all it would be is an enthusiast OS with little or no support and for that you may as well run AROS on x86 PC |
True enough , i forgot os 3.x is 680x0 not ppc.
but what hardware do people run os 4.0x on? the cost of ram & accelerators and rarity must be a problem now? does OS4.0 support OCS / AGA games / demos? |

there is some 68k emulation with OS4 for old apps |

I would imagine that most hard-core OS4.0x user has an Amiga-One. The other two use a Cyberstorm PPC & Blizzard PPC Quote:
Obviously if you are running OS4.x on non-classic hardware there is no OCS/AGA support at all (except to run UAE). |
AmigaKit sell suitable hardware for OS4.1 - but it is expensive - If you have an old MacMini PPC you can try on that;)
But if all you want to do is play games this is not for you. |

MorphOS is being ported to macs (mac mini i think) it has been shown running but is not released for macs yet!
|
I think it's important to remember that you can't really buy any decent hardware to run OS4 on anyway.
So what is the problem with people wanting to do something useful on a Mac like running OS4? ;) As for Apple well do they really care what people do with old PPC Macs? Nope...that's why you can install Linux on them if you want to....I see no issue with Apple. The only issue is Amiga are a bunch of losers who could get the goddess of fertility pregnant after a 3 day marathon orgy :crazy |
OS4 was ported but wasn't released to Joe public, it probably won't ever be released now because it makes no commercial sense (they are a dead HW platform).

Frankly, I think the only port that would make sense at this point is to x86, since that's all that's in serious production these days. I guess AROS has this covered though, since rewriting all the PPC code would take far too long. --Zero |
It's all down to simple maths, no matter how many PPC Macs are out there, there will be less each day/month/year as time goes on....not really the best thing to tie a 'new' OS to is it?
Yes SAM is not ideal either but what can you do, at least ACube seem to be trying to improve it. It's not practical for them to target the x86 market as a whole (too many combinations), it would make more sense to target a single x86 chip/mb with built in graphics (eg Atom based) but they probably just don't have the money/man-power to port all of that PPC code over to x86 (which would take a massive effort). |
Just a thought
Why not a x86 port of OS 4.1 integrated with WinUAE's JIT to make system friendly 68x stuff run fast. Not a ton of OS 4.x software titles so those could be recompiled. Target a certain netbook & or desktop system so there are drivers for display card, soundchips, network card etc. |
Why not simply target the AppleMac's currently in the shops? For a long long time, the Amiga users ran MacOS on the Amiga hardware (via emulation, but that's besides the point) so now it's time for Apple to return the favour ad let us run our stuff on THEIR hardware.

Do you think they even care about Amiga OS? Seriously. |
Seriously, in another 10 years time does anyone think;a) Amiga Inc. will still be around?b) Amiga OS will have been significantly updated to a point of posing a threat to that of Windows 8/9 ~ Mac OS/Linux?c) Amiga Hardware to support old OS4.1 (if no upgrades ever happen). What is certain;Classic hardware will continue to work without breaking warranty seal... Emulation Anything after 1994 did not exist, only new hardware goodies for classic hardware do
who wants a mac anyway? they are so 1997 |
Well im running an Imac now and even thought it intel based (yuk) its better than running Windows version anything...
Surely the sensible thing would be Amiga OS for the intel macs....standard hardware, no pc variability and new hardware every year or two .....Amiga OS 4 with 68000 emulation for games and demos... |

Amiga inc. is a bunch of jerks. That's literally the reason.
