Sonic for the Amiga
Just browsing an old copy of CU Amiga and it said that Ocean had bought the rights to release Sonic in Europe and it would appear in a years time on the Amiga :laughing
|
Actually US Gold bought the rights for conversions of Sonic but they never did anything with it. At least that's what I think, they even planned it for the C64!
|
I think it was pirated/ported/hacked for the SNES.
|
Sonic was released as PD.. Don't remember if it was good, I have it in my boxs with unchecked amiga games..
|
It wasn't exactly released as PD - some guy bodged together a dodgy platformer with a Sonic sprite and released *that* as PD. Sega didn't sell anyone the rights to make Sonic games - they were stupid, but not that stupid. Also, can you imagine any software company spending millions on the rights to one of the most lucrative licences from the 90s and not actually using them?
The SNES version is a hack of another game, apparently - it just has altered graphics and sounds. |

There's even a Sonic demo on the Speccy which is kinda cool.
|
The Speccy was going to get a full homebrewn Sonic game, using the Master System version as the template. The music was apparently virtually identical, as the Speccy 128's sound chip is very similar to the Master System's. However, the guy who was writing the port couldn't get a response out of Sega when he asked them for permission to distribute it, so he hasn't released it as yet.
Check out the comp.sys.sinclair newsgroup for more info. @kombat: Any chance of putting it in the zone so we can have a look? |
I only had the version in GoodSNES 0.999.5/Pirate left... I'll up it in the meantime... will have another looksy and see if I have it burned somewhere.:(
|
I think Sega WAS going to license the Sonic game but as soon as they saw success of it, they said "err... i think we won't license squat". So nothing happened. Well, Sonic got released later on PC :grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
|
How about an Atari St port?
:) *ducks* |

the snes version was a hacked version of the speedy gonzalez game with sonic sprites and sounds and a title screen
|
Or maybe there's a reason, here's what i think :
We all know that USGOLD planned games conversion on most computers right ? Well, guess the atari ST was one of the main targets plateform computers. We also know that sonic can run pretty fast scrolling right ? Well the atari st just couldn't handle a game like sonic, and will the amiga would have been able to, think about the ratio price of the licence/money making on computers versions.... well guess sonic without speed is just not sonic anymore, and if they can't port it on atari st only amiga and 8 bits release maybe, the money making couldn't just be here, so it sounds to me that this project wasn't releaseable. they just can't making enough profit of such a licence... |
I doubt.
From what I saw from US Gold... they could just release a shoddy port and go with it. And I bet it would still sell a lot. |
Indeed, Shatterhand. They only cared about the cash-in
To wit: Amiga and C64 versions of Street Fighter 2 |
