You have 50 OFS disks....what do you fill them with?

So, my A1200's sound is not working, until I can get if fixed i'm using it as a download pack mule to write ADF's for my A500. My next 50 disks have arrived. I'm also bored and working from home, so I came up with this:

This got me thinking of a fun thought experiment. You have 50 blank DD floppies. You have to show someone all the impressive stuff the Amiga OCS can do, in just 50 disks. You have 512/512k, you have no HDD, and a 68000.

You have to show demos, games, music, graphics, utilities and applications.

You may you may use compressors, you can have multiple EXE's per disk.

What's on your 50 disks?

E-Penguin 12 November 2020 22:48

I'd get as far as copying The Settlers then spend the rest of the month waiting for the guard huts to build.

khph_re 12 November 2020 23:40

Not a bad way to spend the whole of lockdown...and any others that might occur!

Wow, that's a question I haven't asked myself since I brought home my Amiga 500 in 1988 and had no money left for any software. :spin

I remember the juggler, and lots of Fish disks... and being frustrated that I didn't have 1 MB RAM. Sorry, been too long...

chip 13 November 2020 16:24

I would fill them with a lot of exes ..... mainly demos, but also some single filed games :D

- Pong
- Octamed (music app)
- Real 3D (graphic app, nice sample scenes to render and show)
- Mortal Kombat 2 (lot's of disk swapping, but imho, worth it)
- Golden Axe
- Fire and Ice
- Gunship 2000
- Monkey Island
- Toki
- Dyna Blaster (or Master Blaster)
- Worms
- Civilization
- Shadow Dancer
- Arabian Nights
- Frontier
- K240
- Brutal Paws of Furry
- FA/18 Interceptor

I've been doing a lot of that :-) A fair few old 3d games have tiny EXE's, and I've been filling up the corners with 64k and under demo's.

I was wondering if shrinkler would work to compress stuff further - i'll have to look into that.

hooverphonique 25 November 2020 10:16

Mold? :-P

chip 25 November 2020 10:16

Nice :D

A great list there, some stuff I hadn't thought of. I put Dune II on floppies and ate six of my 50! Monkey islands etc eat so many disks.

I chose Lotus 2 as well, but I'm thinking of swapping it out for the 96k demo scene version.

A fun lock down hobby till my A1200 sound is fixed :-)

d4rk3lf 25 November 2020 11:53

Yeah, adventures are very big.
Great that you found a demo of Monkey Island, that's the perfect solution.
If there is a demo of Simon the Sorcerer, that would be also great, as this adventure have amazing graphics.

Btw, I am thorn out between "50 disks for Amiga 500 show off", and "50 disks for my personal use".
There is some game that I like very much (Civilization, K240, Castles...), that I'd definitely have for personal playing, but wouldn't use them when I am showing some "Average Joe" what Amiga was all about.

sittingduck 25 November 2020 15:45

Hunter.
Oh, and X-Copy III :-)

Having the same problem. I'm setting it up the A500 as an old Amiga head wants to come round and play games after lockdown, and watch Demo's. But I also want stuff too. Luckily the A1200 still works, (without sound) so applications are not a problem.

X-copy was the first disk I did, and bad copy, so I can use disks with errors (first batch I got off ebay was full of errors).

I'd forgotten about hunter, never played it. Perhaps now is the time.

Next up is to compress the workbench disk, and then pimp it out with some stuff.

manossg 25 November 2020 16:07

I would cerainly include some of Amiga's greater than life 3d titles; the mercenary 2+3, Frontier Elite, Carrier Command, Starglider 2, both Midwinter titles, maybe Captain Blood as well.

khph_re 25 November 2020 16:27

Yes, some of those titles I already have as EXE's on one disk.
3D games seem often be tiny.
Frontier I was in two minds about, it's pretty sluggish on the 68000.

Captain blood is a good one, it just oozes that French style.

It is perfectly playable on 68000/42mhz, but I see you want vanilla A500, so let's leave it out. :S

I thought about federation of free traders, nice graphics - but the gameplay is a bit suspect.

I'm thinking Zeewolf, Hunter, Stunt car racer, Star glider 2 for the 3d stuff.
Was also considering Robocop 3, and there was a 3d flight sim set in a city underneath fog, don't know what the name is.

Found it: *The Killing Cloud*

d4rk3lf 25 November 2020 17:52

If you want speedy 3D on the A500 (but still nice looking)...
I think, nothing beats the; No Second Prize. :)

Check it out.
That engine is insane.
