Wonder how many other names like this were mis-pronounced?

I'll move posts to a new thread on this topic if needed.

I always thought that the creators of Wolfenstein 3D/Doom were called I.D. (Hi Dee) software, until I saw a few years ago a youtube video in which people called it ID (heed) software.

Isn’t it pronounced ID as in bid but without the ‘b’? Named after one of the elements of the psyche?

I did the same thing, pronounced it I. D. software, because I had never heard of the word "id".

Not sure about the element of the psyche, but you are correct, probably more like the id from "bid" than "heed" (it was just the first word that I could think of that had that a similar sound).

I always pronounced it like Dastardly thinks, ID as in bID! There is no punctuation in the lettering so I.D. (as in EYE DEE) is wrong!

lilalurl separated the Psygnosis topic so people can discuss other games/companies that people pronounce differently here!

lilalurl 03 January 2021 14:44

Hmmm, looks like I selected Hedeon's post among the others I moved to the new thread. My mistake. I sent it back to the Psygnosis thread.

I meant my comment, not the thread :-)

+1 for eye dee here. :)

Their earlier games are stylized as "ID" rather than "id," which reads to me like it should be pronounced as two letters rather than one word.

This is from Wikipedia

Quote:

The company writes its name with a lowercase id, which is pronounced as in "did" or "kid", and, according to the book Masters of Doom, the group identified itself as "Ideas from the Deep" in the early days of Softdisk but that, in the end, the name 'id' came from the phrase "in demand".[18] Disliking "in demand" as "lame", someone suggested a connection with Sigmund Freud's psychological concept of id, which the others accepted.[7] Evidence of the reference can be found as early as Wolfenstein 3D with the statement "that's id, as in the id, ego, and superego in the psyche" appearing in the game's documentation. Prior to an update to the website, id's History page made a direct reference to Freud.

The brand Thomson, often mistakenly called "Thompson".

Pixelfill 03 January 2021 21:25

Consider myself edu-ma-cated, I always pronounced it as I(eye)D(dee), since the early logo was ID, even the book of id that came with the Doom collectors box set didn't shed light on the correct pronunciation.

id (as in bid) it shall be from now on.

Who wants to play the Sega game?

In the US, "SAY-GA"
In Australia, "SEE-GA"
In Japan, and what I think is the actual pronounciation, "SEH-GA"

I've seen people argue over this one.

In the UK we used to say SEE-GA for years but then once we heard how it was really said - we changed to SAY-GA. Aussies are stubborn I think, they just kept on.

Is actually a shortening of SErvice GAmes and was originally a US company based in Hawaii - so maybe it should really be SER GAY :D

NIKEEEY is another big one. I still say Nike like Pike. Because NiKEEEY sounds too effeminate.

Rotareneg 03 January 2021 22:38

Never heard SEGA pronounced say-ga in the US, it was always seh-ga, just like the boot up jingle on the Sonic games. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if some regional dialects turned it into say-ga.

dreamkatcha 03 January 2021 23:20

I haven't got an opinion on any of this so I'm just going to get on with soldering my homage to herbs. Yeah, I know, it's a niche hobby.

That or play a Teetus game like Teetus the Fox.

What about ASUS?

Some say ASSus, some say AYsus (AY as in 'say') but the correct pronunciation is 'AY'soos according to ASUS!!

To me, the boot jingle sounds like "Say-ga" so that's how I pronounce it. :)
