A600 upgrades

hi all just bought an A600 because i used to have one as a kid and am looking for ideas to upgrade it i have just bought a 3 gig harddrive but any other ideas would be great and if anyone knows where to buy the upgrades at a reasonable price that would also be great

many thanks in advance

Paul.

Hi Paul, Welcome to EAB.

I have upgraded my A600 with an A604. It's a 1mb chip ram upgrade that also allows you to add an Indivision ECS and USB module at a later date. I bought mine from http://www.amigakit.com/

I also use a CF adapter and a 2gb Cf card for a HardDrive. I have cut the case and mounted the adapter over the PCMCIA port allowing me to change cards without opening the case (again).

max out the chip memory to 2 megabytes, then get a PCMCIA SRAM card which will get you fast ram with 30% speed gain and access to wider range of whdload games.

Accelerators are a bit too pricey and seem dubious investment for me (you still won't be able to run latest stuff like Mr Beanbag which require AGA), for the price of one you could buy A1200 (maybe with fast ram).

I'd love to upgrade my A600 - but I'm not so keen on the costly aspects of such an upgrade. I suppose things that are vintage will always now cost more ... lol

mikele 05 April 2012 14:09

lesta smsc: I agree. Sometimes the cost of buying A600 + 1 MB CHIP upgrade (not to mention newer Kickstart if you happen to have 37.299) matches or even exceeds the price of A1200 on used market :-/ When you shell out that amount of money you will promptly notice that quality of video signal on your LCD monitor pretty much sucks, so you need to spend even more on Indivision ECS ;)

It's also worth pointing out that a few of the older games wont run on a 1200, simply because many software developers failed to follow Commodore's programming guidelines! so A600 is still a reasonable and usable retro games machine with some extra memory (In my opinion), but yeah it can be an expensive hobby :(

mikele 06 April 2012 09:18

true, besides nothing beats the real thing. That's why I bought A600 again ( almost 15 years after having sold one ), despite the fact the most bang for the buck in Amiga retro gaming area would be sotfmodded original XBOX with UAE installed.

An A600 is a very desirable little machine nowadays, imo. Expanded with the right hardware (ACA630, Indivision ECS, A604, KS3.1, flashdrive) it is an absolute hot rod and, I have to admit, has replaced my A1200 as my main Miggy.

It is the slowest Miggy I have (besides my A1200, A2000 & A3000), but the aforementioned upgrades and its small size earned it a permanent place at my desk.

Funny, it took 20 years for the A600 to become the computer it needed to be back then... :-)

Completely agree :) can just imagine if we had all of this great stuff back then ;)

mfilos 17 April 2012 14:01

+1 as well :)

I use my A600 beast almost daily. It sux cause I thought I'd use my A4000 GREX setup instead lol.
Anyway, the A600 with all these upgrades plus the small and cute footprint, really makes a nice Amiga for daily use.

lesta_smsc 18 April 2012 01:50

Ah... nice to see A600 being praised!

From wiki: The Managing Director of Commodore UK, David Pleasance, described the A600 as a "complete and utter screw-up".

I guess it wasn't after all ... lol

Although, all the cost of upgrades makes me wonder if it is actually cheaper to go with A1200?

spannernick 06 May 2012 14:57

Yeah you always get into the stuff that's collectable now more then when it was selling great..;)

I have a A600 and I got it in 1996,I use my A1200 more now a days..

darksun9210 24 May 2012 18:54

heh, after spending out on boosting my A600 with the following:-
ACA630 cpu accelerator and ram,
A603 then A604 trapdoor chip ram expansions,
IndivisionECS vga adapter / gfx card? ;)
Subway USB card
4Gb CF card and adapter seems as incidental expenses ^.^
i could have bought one... maybe two PS3's? lol
and i agree, all this to become the machine we wanted it to be 20 years ago! :D
