Command & Conquer source coming - Amiga implications?

Funnily enough, I just finished the last level of the excellent Dune 2 on my 1200 last night. It is an awesome game, but I was musing, it would be nice to have a few extra touches like sending a group of vehicles to a location/attack with one command. Then this morning I saw this:

I have no idea, is that something that could be realistically adapted to an AGA Amiga?

I've got Dune2000 running on my Linux box using OpenRA. The data files are available already. OpenRA needs a fancier compiler than what we have but you might get it working using old MSDOS Command and Conquer sources on a full 030+. C&C requires an MMU however so an 020 is out of the question.

You'll have more luck getting Dune Legacy ported.

I like to ask those hard as nails question but what makes C&C use an MMU for and how could be adapted to remove that requirement?
Ah, and how many geological eras an adaptation like that might ballpark take?

I only read about the Command and Conquer source in an interview back in the day. I haven't looked at the source yet. The lack of a proper MMU and fast CPU was listed as why there wouldn't be an Amiga version.

I wonder what they'd have made of Exodus: The Last War. :)

Excodus Last war is very good game AND still available for very economy price 3€

Though Command and Conquer port would be nice, IF not a stupid SDL.

so we can assume that the MMU was simply mentioned as substitute for "more than 16MB of RAM!"

the official requirements for the DOS version are
486 DX2 66 MHz and 8 MB RAM (probably with swapping...)

the Mac version is PPC only

dlfrsilver 21 May 2020 21:42

Well 8mb of ram on A1200 is fine :)

Agreed. Using the blitter and planar graphics an 030 50 MHz with a lot of Fast RAM could do it. Probably the same requirements as Exodus.

Never played it.

I would if it was available on an Amiga.

Me neither, so I ported it to Amiga and I'm playing it now on my CDTV with Pistorm. :)

Unfortunately, I’m stuck to a 68030@50. the PiStorm adapters and similar accelerators don’t feel „Amiga“ to me. What I do have is a ZZ9000.

I am aware that I am missing out some things here.

Let’s see. I am intrigued by the technical aspects of this. Hats off to the people taking on a task such as this.

I've added Expansion Pack support lately.
