[abime.net] New abime.net portal online !

Here we go, the new version of the abime.net portal is now ready :)

The design is much more simple (good for slow connection ;)) and color sheme is similar to EAB3.
what's new?
  • News are generated from the EAB's news forum (powerfull editor)
  • News feed for everyone (Javascript, RSS2, RSS, XML)
  • Anybody can post news if a few seconds, they will be moderated by one EAB team
  • New Statistic area
  • Search through Forums & News BOX
  • Search games in Hall Of Light BOX

I think something from the old news portal is missing and would be useful. For example look at my post about teh Catweasel press release. it's huge! how about the site condensing it for showing on the first page (á la slashdot) and clicking "read more" to see the whole thing? I think it's a pain in the arse to have to scroll like that if the newspost is as huge as mine.

Where did the comments system go, as well?

What are the crescents near the boing ball for?:crazy

Frog 24 July 2004 03:01

Very good job! The interface is much clearer and pleasant to read. I don't know if it's due to the colors but now the Abime.net portal breath :great

PS : I like the About section !

Thanks for the cool comments :)

  • The split of news is considered, but I got one huge problem with vBcode, ex: take any post with some quotes, split in inside the quote -> all the table design is broken.
  • The comment system is still there ! there is the number of reply at the end of every news.

Because I love this :)

Extremely impressive, efficient (my 56K dialup loves you), clean, multiple resolution friendly design and it’s nice to see abime.net using the full width of the browser.

But…..

Can we have it “Classic” style? You know, EAB2 colours. It’s too bright an…..argh only kidding! Just thought I’d wind you up a bit RCK. :p

As you know, I’m not a great fan of certain aspects of that colour scheme but it does look great from a presentation viewpoint and I applaud your work. The entire site really has become a work of art. :cool

Are you planning on eventually updating HOL as well?

Marcuz 24 July 2004 15:10

AAAAAArgh! where's the shoutbox!!!!???? :crying :banghead and PLEASE upload another theme, maybe orange or yellow, this is too similar to the board!!! besides, err i'm here since 5 seconds ago so i'll have time to find pros and praise causes for portal... later. :D :crying :spin

The shoutbox is dead, too much spam, not enough users. Maybe later :)

Nice work :) Lookin' Good

However.....Banners link has all the images missing :(

RCK 24 July 2004 19:43

I don't seem to have this problem.. screenshot ? browser ? empty cache ? :)

Jim 25 July 2004 14:47

Working fine now. Who knows why ?

fiath 27 July 2004 18:07

I just noticed this, very nice!

Just one question, is there any particular reason you used the DublinCore extensions for the RSS2 feed? I guess there may be fields you wanted to use that are not available in "plain" RSS2, though I couldn't see any.

Anyway here is a good example of non DublinCore-extended-RSS2:
http://www.jetbrains.com/rss.xml

Some elements are missing there like <language>, which is also available as a non DC alternative. If you don't know of one, I am sure I can find a site with a full list.

IMHO much "cleaner", but I guess it depends on what you want...

RCK 27 July 2004 19:15

I'll look more into the RSS2 spec :)

But that's just pointing to the corresponding EAB thread. Before you could comment even if you weren't an EAB user, now it would be impossible. Not much of a prob maybe... dunno.

The top part looks very bad. the abime.net and the gray circles with lots of gradient... the old logo looked much better :/

The past logo was the same, with more spaghetti behind :p
about the gray circles I don't know, I loves them but I need more user feedback.

I don't like them. They make my eyes feel strange looking at them.

Paul 27 July 2004 20:15

I agree with jim :agree

Antiriad 27 July 2004 21:05

Try a drop shadow instead RCK

Amiga1992 28 July 2004 04:07

Hmmm.. too many gradients is what bothers me, i guess.
Gradient fill in the background
Gradient fill in the ABIME.NET text
Gradient fill in the Boing ball
Gradient fill in the "crescends"

Okay :) I know what you mean though, there are tons of examples for DC-enabled RSS instead of "plain" RSS. It seems it is perfectly valid, just an "extension" so up to you whether you use it or not.

I don't know what spec you use, but it seems the main one for "plain" RSS is here:
