[Found: Space Baller] Bouncing ball in space?

I'm trying to find a game I played in the late 80's or early 90's... It came on one disk and I believe you played some kind of ball that bounced around on tiles in space, in a pseudo-3D view similar to Space Harrier, Outrun, etc.

I know that's a lousy description, but what I do remember CLEARLY about this game is the music, because it was looped samples of two very famous songs:

Depeche Mode - Just can't get enough
and
Scotch - Disco Band

Depeche played during the title, and Scotch during the game. Also, if I'm not entirely mistaken, I think if you fell off the screen you (the ball) made a hysterious scream as you "died".

Anyone know what game this was?

As a little minor OT: This always reminds me of the PC game Kosmonaut (and its 1992 sequel SkyRoads) from the same year (1990 like Jump'n'Roll; according to HOL and the Kosmonaut developers' website).

(And as a little more OT: Woohoo for freeware releases of old games :spin)

Anybody know if there's a common ancestor (or who stole from who :p)?

I think Trailblazer (Atari XE/XL) was first (1986):

Ah yes, indubitably. Thanks!

Yes, I think Trailblazer could be it! I don't think it's Jump'n'Roll, because I don't remember the ball looking that "good". It was more simply drawn, like the 2-colour one in the Trailblazer screenshot.

But how come Trailblazer doesn't exist in HOL? This was indeed on the Amiga, that I know for sure.

There was a game on Atari ST I had where you rolled along this tiled road in the middle of space. It appeared like you were rolling on the inside of a large ring. you could have two players and you had guns. I think it was called road wars? Is that the one? I guess it came out on Amiga too.

Kada 05 February 2008 15:08

Sorry, not Road Wars. :(

Indeed it is, there is a PD version which I mentioned in another thread, check the screenshot in this post to see if it's the one you're after.

It is indeed some kind of Trailblazer clone, and I definitely remember the football bouncing around in space... But I seem to wanna remember there being stars in the background too. And I don't remember it being split-screen.

I'm starting to wonder if this might have been some homemade game, considering the choice of music... (licensing Depeche Mode must have been expensive for a commercial title)....

I don't have that PD game, but if anyone has, does it have the music by Depeche Mode and Scotch?

Ironclaw 05 February 2008 18:51

http://hol.abime.net/4450 love the tune of this one, if I remember correctly. It was among the first games I played.

Graham Humphrey 05 February 2008 18:54

Can't imagine it's that one though, given it doesn't have the "pseudo-3D view" and stuff.

(I remember that game, too. Haven't played it for years.)

Mmm. didn't bother with reading the description :), it's a bouncing ball so I posted it as it's the one I remember most.

Graham Humphrey 05 February 2008 18:58

Hmm, you probably won't get very far with these sort of threads if you don't read the description properly ;)

Kada 05 February 2008 19:07

Actually... when I saw that "Space Baller" screenshot, I got a strange feeling of deja vu. Have I mixed this up completely?? I am pretty sure the game was in pseudo-3D like Trailblazer, but now that I saw that screenshot I'm beginning to feel doubt.... Damn, I guess the only way to find out is to get my hands on it!

Kada 05 February 2008 21:08

SPACE BALLER it is!! I found an ADF of it and checked it just now. And there was the music and everything! Woohoo!! Thank you very much everyone for your help. I can now relive some of my childhood memories. :)

Graham Humphrey 05 February 2008 21:16

Wow - so Ironclaw, by getting it totally wrong, was exactly right :laughing

Kada 05 February 2008 22:48

It was the music! :)

Ironclaw 06 February 2008 02:18

Well, actually, me posting it was also cause Kada is Swedish aswell, and this game was played mostly by us swedes I reckon :), very common game in Sweden for some reason, all Amiga buddies I knew played it :), so posted it for that reason aswell (having in mind maybe it could be that game anyway) :D.. just didn't say it like that incase I was wrong :D..
